Mbira is the traditional music of the Shona people with a rich history dating back more than a thousand years. In colonial times its popularity declined as the missionaries taught that the mbira was evil due to its association with ancestral spirits. An extension of Shona culture, folklore, wisdom and spirituality Mbira was used in ceremonies to call for rain or cure illnesses when there were outbreaks.

Here fans enjoy live mbira music at this years festival. Every year in September, mbira groups and fans gather. This year 2018 the Mbira Festival was postponed to December because of a ban on gatherings in September due to a cholera outbreak.
